JPG, PNG or WebP: which format to use on your site
When each one makes sense and how to convert them.
The short answer
- JPG: for photographs.
- PNG: for logos, screenshots and anything that needs a transparent background or very sharp edges.
- WebP: when you want lighter files with similar quality. Current browsers display it without problems.
JPG: the classic for photos
JPG is the most common format. It works very well with photographs because it produces light files. Its limit: it does not support transparency. If you convert a transparent image to JPG, the transparent areas become white.
PNG: exact quality and transparency
PNG keeps the exact quality of the image and supports a transparent background. It is ideal for logos, icons, screenshots with text and graphics. In exchange, a photograph saved as PNG usually weighs quite a bit more than as JPG.
WebP: lighter
WebP usually weighs less than the other two with similar quality, and it also supports transparency. That makes it a good option for a website that wants to load fast.
How to choose for each case
| What you have | Recommended format |
|---|---|
| Product or landscape photos | JPG or WebP |
| Logo with a transparent background | PNG or WebP |
| Screenshot with text | PNG |
| Images for a site that must load fast | WebP |
How to convert your images
- Open Convert image.
- Select or drag your JPG, PNG or WebP images.
- Choose the format you want to convert them to.
- Press Convert image and download and save the result.
Everything happens in your browser: your images are not uploaded to any server.
Two tricks to make your site load better
- Adjust the size before uploading. A photo 4000 pixels wide is not needed for an 800-pixel space. Use Resize image.
- Compress it. Compress image cuts the weight so your page loads faster.
