Free template: personal finance dashboard
Track income, expenses and savings in one panel.
What it is for
Knowing where your money goes is the first step to saving. The Personal finance template shows you, from a simple list of transactions, how much you earned, how much you spent, how much you saved and which categories you spend the most on.
It works with your own Excel or CSV file and everything is built in your browser: your data is not uploaded to any server.
The file you need
One row per transaction. The date and the amount are required; the type and the category are optional, but it helps to include them:
| Date | Amount | Type | Category |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-01 | 2500 | Income | Salary |
| 2026-10-03 | 120 | Expense | Food |
| 2026-10-05 | 60 | Expense | Transport |
| 2026-10-10 | 200 | Expense | Utilities |
| 2026-10-15 | 300 | Income | Extra work |
Copy this table into an Excel sheet as a starting point and replace it with your own transactions. Save it as .xlsx or .csv. The sample amounts are made up: use your real figures.
If you leave out the type column, the template uses the sign of the amount: positive amounts count as income and negative ones as expenses. If you include it, write words like “Income” or “Salary” for income; any other text (for example “Expense”) counts as an expense.
How to use the template
- Go to Dashboards and press Upload Excel or CSV.
- Upload your file.
- Choose the Personal finance template.
- In Match your columns, check which column is the date, which is the amount, which is the type (income or expense) and which is the category.
- Look at the result.
What you will see
- Income, expenses and savings for the period, and your savings rate.
- Income and expenses by month, to see whether you spend more than you earn.
- Savings by month.
- Expenses by category, to find out where most of your money goes.
Tips for better records
- Use few categories, clear and always the same: food, transport, housing, utilities, health, leisure. Too many categories make the chart confusing.
- Record daily or once a week. If you leave it until the end of the month, you will forget small expenses.
- Mark the type correctly. Each row should say whether it is income or an expense, always written the same way (or use negative amounts for expenses).
- Review the expenses-by-category chart each month and pick a single thing to improve.
